American Samoa World War II Trails & Relics
On arrival in American Samoa your guide will be at the airport to meet you and you will enjoy a scenic drive to the trails in our air-conditioned mini-van. Hiking along the heritage trail takes us past multiple World War II installations that helped protect American Samoa from a Japanese invasion. They symbolize American Samoa’s importance as a route from the United States to Australia and New Zealand. At Blunts Point you will see an intact six- foot naval gun, relics and bunkers. The extended WWII trail is within a tropical rainforest allowing glimpses of native birds, often times you can hear them singing. Along the last section of the trail there are quite a few steep ‘ladders’ or steps with ropes that take you to the end of the trail where an aerial tramway used to transport visitors from Solo Hill to the summit of Mount Alava just across the Pago Pago Harbor. This was the only such cable car in the South Pacific and was originally used to carry TV transmission equipment to the mountaintop. In 1980, a U.S. Navy plane struck the cables during an air show sadly killing the six-man crew and two people on the ground. Rebuilt, the tramway was again destroyed by Hurricane Val in 1992 and remnants and a memorial remain at the site.
At the completion of the tour you will visit Sadies By the Sea Hotel to relax with a refreshing drink and a bite to eat before your return transfer back to the airport for your flight to Samoa.
This guided tour takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is a must do for those with an interest in WWII history. Mosquito repellent and good walking shoes are a must.
Tour operates 3 x per week. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from Samoa.
